Leonie's statement about If a butterfly dies in the forest...
We are living in a time of rapid change and whilst many changes are beneficial they tend to come at a cost to our environment, with an attendant impact on the other species with whom we share this planet.
I am concerned about the degradation to our environment caused by profligate water usage, unsustainable farming practices, spewing forth of chemicals into our waterways, clearing of land that engenders loss of native habitat.
My exhibition is about the challenges our environment is facing, focusing on native Australian butterflies to highlight the losses we have already sustained and the diversity we continue to lose. Imagine a world without the beauty of a passing butterfly fluttering by. Sadly, this is happening. We now rarely see the large colourful butterflies of a generation ago.
The work in the exhibition is a series of abstract woodblock prints and mixed media drawings and paintings, based on butterflies.
The title of the exhibition, If a butterfly dies in the forest…, is based on the idea of the butterfly effect and chaos theory, where everything is interconnected. If a butterfly flapping its wings in a forest can cause a hurricane, what must happen when the butterfly dies?
